Guest post by Judy Basham, Residential Faculty in Early Childhood Education
Throughout my time at Glendale Community College, I learned a great
deal about myself both personally and professionally. I grew in many
ways, but my biggest takeaway from my experience at GCC has always
been the students.
As an instructor, it was my goal to ensure that every student felt seen,
valued, and supported. In teaching across all platforms, I made it a
priority to create an environment where students felt successful while
also developing a deep understanding of children and families. My focus
has always been on student success and helping each learner reach their
full potential.
Since 2014, the connections I have built with students have been one of
the most meaningful parts of my journey. I get great satisfaction
knowing that many of the students I have had over the years are still a
major part of my life, just as I am a part of theirs. These lasting
relationships mean more to me than words can express. Each student has
played an important role in my story, and they will always hold a special
place in my heart.
Watching them thrive—whether graduating from GCC, continuing on to
a four-year university, or pursuing a master’s degree—has been the
greatest reward as an instructor. Building connections with others in
order to lift each other up is truly my biggest accomplishment as a
professor.
Knowing that I have been even a small part of their story and success is
truly a blessing. My experience at GCC has taught me that teaching is
not just about content, but about relationships, impact, and believing in
students even before they fully believe in themselves.
