I’ve heard a lot of chatter about generative AI from both sides. I’ve heard that it’s a gamechanger, and I have heard that it is the devil. When generative AI started gaining popularity, I leaned more towards it’s the devil, but knew that I had that perspective because I didn’t know a lot about it. Since then,  I have been on a quest to understand it, and I want to share my journey with you so that you can understand the conclusion that I have come to about generative AI.

I learned more about AI and how it could be used in the classroom through Go2Knowledge. It is a place/space where you can complete workshops, seminars, and micro credentials that focus on different topics that are applicable to faculty and staff. Access is free for GCC faculty and staff and can be obtained through the CTLE if you are interested. The topic that I decided to focus on was generative AI and the different ways that it can be used in the classroom.

I have completed 12 hours of training, and it all focused on generative AI; the majority of the content focused on ChatGPT. I learned how to create study guides and announcements based on how students are progressing through the course. I learned that I can use it to check and see if specific sections in my syllabus are clear and make sense. I can also ask ChatGPT to generate highlights on one page, so that students can quickly reference essential information like late work policies. I also learned about key implications like ethical use and data privacy.

If you are interested in learning a little bit more about a specific subject in teaching and learning, I highly recommend utilizing Go2Knowledge through the CTLE. I really enjoyed accessing content specific to what I was looking for. One of the reasons why you should give it a try is your own personal professional development. A second reason is that, for residential faculty, it can be submitted for FPG hours. And, there are currently two microcredentials you can gain in AI from Go2Knowledge. Microcredentials can be added to your professional portfolio and to spaces like LinkedIn.

Generative AI is an overwhelming topic. I’m truly thankful that I was able to use Go2Knowledge to learn a little bit more about a specific topic through quality content in a centralized location. After my twelve hours of training, I feel like I know a little bit more and that I have several tools that I can use for my toolbox. The topic does not feel so overwhelming. Thank you, Go2Knowledge! I no longer feel like generative AI is the devil.
